5 Herbs for Healthy Skin: Enhancing Wellness from Within

5 herbs I started incorporate into my wellness routine to help promote proper functioning of the body to bring forth healthy skin.

If the body doesn’t properly, eliminate toxins through the liver, lymph and kidneys, then they end up going out the skin, causing skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne. Herbs that clean the blood, cleanse the lymph, encourage healthy digestion, drain fluids, increase circulation, relax the liver and nervous system, will promote a healthier functioning of the body overall.

As I revamped my wellness routine, focusing on clean, nutrient-rich foods and reducing sugar and caffeine intake, and eliminating wine, incorporating herbs became a cornerstone of my regimen.

Paying heed to my body’s signals, such as dry skin, hair loss, oily complexion, and fatigue, spurred me to focus on liver health and blood cleansing, with herbs playing a significant role.

The results were dramatic–my complexion took on a radiant, rosy glow, and my body felt revitalized and rejuvenated.

It became clear that what I truly needed all along was simply a commitment to my well-being, by listening to my body and integrating herbs as an essential component of my self-care routine.

Here are the herbs that provided this function:

Burdock Root: Known for its detoxifying properties, burdock root supports liver function by acting as a blood purifier. It contains compounds that stimulate bile production and help cleanse the blood, thereby assisting the liver in filtering toxins. Burdock is one of those remedies that is gentle in its actions, with its medicinal virtues shows through longer term use.

Dandelion Leaf: Dandelion leaf is recognized for its diuretic properties, which promote the elimination of toxins through urine. It supports liver health by enhancing bile production and flow, aiding in digestion, and reducing liver stagnation and inflammation through its cooling properties.

Horsetail contains silica, a mineral that is essential for the formation of collagen, which gives skin its strength and elasticity. Silica may help promote wound healing and improve the overall texture and appearance of the skin. Horsetail also contains antioxidants, such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which can help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. This may help reduce the signs of aging and promote overall skin health.

Mugwort: Not only does it get bile flowing to help break down fats and support digestion, but Mugwort is also an expert at cleansing the toxins right out of your liver. And it’s not just detoxifying, it’s got this amazing ability to shield your liver from harm with its hepatoprotective capabilities. Contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.

Holy Basil (Tulsi): This one’s all about giving your liver a shield against oxidative stress. Packed with antioxidants, Holy Basil’s protects your liver. Plus, it’s also lending a hand to liver metabolism and fighting off any stagnation that might come its way. This is so important for proper functioning. Consult your practitioner before taking this herb if you are pregnant.

How to make: 1 tablespoon of each herb + 4 cups of water. I infuse for at least an hour or more, covered to get a full mineral rich tea from Horsetail. When ready, I drink it all and reuse the herbs for a second infusion. I do this twice a day for a least a week.

The duration and quantity of herbal infusion consumption for detoxification can vary depending on factors like the individual's health, the specific herbs used, and their potency. Typically, one to three cups daily for a few weeks to a month is a common recommendation for detox regimens.
