Oat Milk For Everyday
When committing to a zero waste lifestyle, reducing product waste is a crucial step. For the past five years, our household has implemented the simple yet impactful practice of making our own oat milk as part of our daily routine. This not only eliminates the need for paper or plastic cartons but also allows us to experiment with different options. We've tried nut milk, which was too expensive and unsustainable for us, flax seed milk, which was affordable and healthy but lacked creaminess, and finally, oat milk which is affordable, sustainable, packed with whole grain nutrition and has the perfect creamy texture.
One of the benefits of making oat milk is its zero-waste aspect, as oats are readily available in bulk bin aisles and the pulp is compostable. If you're looking to have some fun with food waste, the pulp can be used as a base for crackers or cookies and even added to your breakfast oatmeal or smoothie. Here is our tried and tested oat milk recipe if you'd like to give it a try.
::
1. Place 1 cup of oats, sprinkles of nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamon, and 3-5 cups of filtered water in a blender and blend for one minute.
2. Open nut milk bag or mesh strainer over a large bowl. Pour the milk into the bag and gently squeeze the bag and pulp to release the milk.
3. Drink as is or add a sweetener (honey or maple syrup are nice) or vanilla extract.
4. Store in fridge for up to three days.
5. Enjoy!
