DIY Herb-Infused Beer Rinse for Healthy, Shiny Hair
Beer without alcohol offers multiple benefits for hair, helping to transform dull and limp locks into stronger, shinier strands with consistent usage. The malt and hops in beer are rich in proteins, which nourish and strengthen hair, aiding in repair and rebuilding. As these proteins adhere to the hair cuticle, they smooth the hair surface, enhancing its ability to reflect light and adding noticeable luster and shine. This results in hair that looks shinier and feels stronger and more resilient to breakage.
Hops in beer have mild astringent properties, which can help balance oil production on the scalp. Brewer's yeast, found in beer, contains B vitamins and other nutrients that support a healthy scalp. This balance helps maintain a clean, healthy scalp environment, promoting overall better hair health.
Beer can help dissolve and remove residue from hair products, such as gels, hairsprays, and conditioners. The natural acidity of beer helps break down this buildup, leaving your hair feeling cleaner.
Now, you could use the beer as is, but here at Mommy Turns Green, we infuse everything we can with herbs! In my reel, I chose sage, but you can choose the best herb for your hair concerns. Infusing herbs into flat beer typically takes about 1 to 2 weeks to extract the beneficial properties of the herbs effectively.
Here’s a simple guide on how to do it:
Steps for Infusing Herbs into Flat Beer:
Preparation: Start with flat beer. Let the beer sit open in the fridge until it loses its carbonation.
Choose Your Herbs: Select the herbs you want to infuse. Common choices include chamomile, lavender, rosemary, and sage. See other herbs for hair care here!
Sterilize Your Equipment: Ensure that all jars, bottles, and utensils are thoroughly cleaned and sterilized to prevent contamination.
Combine Beer and Herbs: Place the dried and slightly powdered herbs in a clean jar or bottle. Pour the flat beer over the herbs, making sure they are fully submerged.
Seal and Store: Seal the container tightly and to prevent mold growth and ensure the mixture remains safe to use, it’s best to keep the infusion in the refrigerator during this period.
Infusion Time: Let the mixture infuse for at least 2 weeks. Shake the container gently every few days to help distribute the herb.
Strain and Use: After the infusion period, strain out the herb using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. The infused beer is now ready to use after shampooing.
To use:
Pour the flat beer over your hair, massaging it gently into your roots and along the length of your hair for about a minute.
For optimal results, let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes as you continue with your shower.
Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, not hot.
Add to a spray bottle to leave a small amount in your hair for enhanced benefits.
When using non-alcoholic beer, the beer will not dry your hair out so we can use it a few times a month.
As you might have guessed, clarifying your hair with hair rinses like this one and the other one I’ve provided here, are essential to do before starting a natural shampoo routine. You’ll experience less buildup and manageability.
